This is another sign job for one of my favorite people Gary of Enormous Room/Central Kitchen. I have done his dj booth(Nov.2007), wall on the stair way(Sep.2010), and just finished the entrance today.

Long Beach, CA, August 3, 2009 - DDR Projects welcomes twelve emerging American contemporary artists to the gallery for the group exhibit entitled “Fragments”. Co-curated by Damion Silver, the exhibit will showcase some of our country’s brightest and most creative artists that have yet to be tapped. Please join us for an evening of exciting art.
Fragments; to break or separate, or to reduce or become reduced to pieces or components. Residual matter? The exhibit can go either way depending on the individual viewer and how they ultimately define our newest exhibit and the body of work. Like aesthetic archaeologists, these twelve artists dig beneath the surface of their engaging and visually complex works to expose their emotional and thematic foundations. The modern world with all its beauty and grotesque seen threw the eyes of twelve American artists.

New York City (July/Aug 2009): Gawker Artists presents MOM & POPism, an exhibition curated by Billi Kid reinterpreting James and Karla Murray's latest book, Store Front: The Disappearing Face of New York, in unique collaboration with many of today's hottest graffiti and street artists.

Store Front: The Disappearing Face of New York is a breathtaking visual guide to New York City's cultural heritage, with special emphasis on the historic streets and ethnic shops that have defined its many neighborhoods. Meticulously photographed, its powerful images of time-worn institutions will be printed at close to life-size scale and installed on the Gawker Media roof, becoming canvases on which select graffiti and street artists are invited to leave their indelible marks. The result will be a unique impression of a New York City that seems to be fading with each passing day. Our cultural and economic landscape will be called into question, the role of art, particularly graffiti and street art, will be subject to reinterpretation.

Curated by Gawker Artist Billi Kid, MOM & POPism brings together graffiti and street artists to create new artworks on top of the Murray's photographs. The collaborating graffiti and street artists represent some of the most notable artists in the street art community and the media at large. These include Blanco, Buildmore, Cake, Celso, Cern, Chris (RWK), Crome, Cycle, David Cooper, Destroy & Rebuild, Enamel Kingdom, Goldenstash, Infinity, Kngee, Lady Pink, Matt Siren, Morgan Thomas, Peru Ana Ana Peru, Plasma Slugs, Royce Bannon, Shai R. Henry Street Settlement’s Abrons Arts Center is delighted to present Visual Slang 2009: The Modern Urban Imagination, the third in a series of cutting-edge global urban art exhibits.

Integral to contemporary urban art is an eclectic range of characters and creatures. Representing a broad spectrum of cultural heritages, the images presented in Visual Slang 2009 celebrate this aspect of the modern urban imagination.

Some of these characters are figurative; others are abstract. Some are easily recognizable icons; others are intentionally ambiguous. Some are whimsical in spirit; others are dark and unsettling. Whether drawn, painted or stenciled, all of these characters – from the personal to the political – exude a vibrant energy that is certain to captivate.

Among the images presented are: C215’s finely-detailed stencils inspired by his recent travels; Ame72’s iconic Lego man navigating his way in our nuclear age; Klone’s curious creatures that stalk the streets of Tel Aviv; Bastardilla’s shimmering lady that graces the walls of Bogota; A1one’s fanciful characters that evoke the cultural landscape of his native Tehran; and Shayne Bovell's apocalyptic figures that inhabit an alternate universe.

Other featured artists include: Sebastian Bagge, Cekis, Jason Cosme, Daniel Dover, Lorenzo Gomez, Joseph Knight, Malik, Alex White Mazzarella, Mefisto, Kenji Nakayama, David “Gaze” Pham, Julio Rölle, Adi Sened, Stinkfish, and Zero Cents. Among those artists representing NYC are: Bishop, Cern, Charm, Chris Cortes, Sien, Spaze Crafte One and Whisper.

Curated by Lois Stavsky with Jonathan Meres Cohen, Visual Slang 2009: The Modern Urban Imagination opens on June 25th with a reception from 6-8 p.m. and continues through August 14th.
